Deconstrucción histórica del Facundo de Domingo Faustino Sarmiento: América Latina en la encrucijada.

Abstract

Este artículo se propone realizar una reconstrucción diacrónica o his-tórica del subtítulo del Facundo, “Civilización y barbarie”, estudiándola como es empleada con frecuencia por Sarmiento: en su oposición. No hay civilización sin barbarie real o asignada. Se describirán asignaciones de sentido en relación a estos dos términos y su mutua dependencia hasta llegar a Sarmiento. Él no lo entendía tan tajantemente como lo decía, pero el contexto de la polémica lo exigía: de allí parte de su brillantez tal vez hoy perdida. Civilización y barbarie refería también a un sentido de perte-nencia; a una patria: de ahí el interés por el cambio histórico de asignación de sentido. Se presentan sucesivas asignaciones en la dramática, la lírica y otras documentaciones del caso. The purpose of this article is to draw a diachronic and historical re-construction of civilization and barbarism, the two terms in the subtitle of Domingo Bautista Sarmiento’s Facundo, which are interpreted quite fre-quently as opposites. In a way, there is no civilization without barbarism real or assigned it. We will be analyzing the meaning and application of both words and their reciprocal dependence in the literature from earlier until Sarmiento’s times. Although Sarmiento himself did not contrast so sharply, the controversial context demanded it, though it seems, may have lost the candor for today. Civilization and barbarism referred to a sense of belonging.; a homeland. Hence the interest in historical chance of sen-se assignment. We present sequential accounts in the narrative, literature, poetry, dramas, and other stories.
